Epoxy Flooring & Coatings Epoxy flooring and other coatings are generally functional applications intended to protect concrete and other surfaces from damage caused by impact or abrasion, oils and other chemicals, heat and general wear and tear. Often times the coatings are designed not only to protect the underlying surface, but also to protect pedestrians or workers from slip/fall injuries by incorporating slip resistance into the coatings systems. A variety of colors, decorative quartz, and decorative chips are all available to add a designer or decorative appeal to coatings. Epoxies and urethanes are the most commonly used coatings. Many variations of each exist in order to serve the varied needs of industrial, commercial, and residential customers.
As standard procedure, Toughstuff Industrial Floors shot blasts and/or diamond grinds all areas of concrete prior to all flooring or coatings installations. Toughstuff uses 100% solids, epoxy patching compound to fill cracks and to make repairs to concrete substrate following mechanical preparation prior to the coatings installations.
These coatings may also be installed over wood substrates with the aid of fiberglass reinforcement to control cracking.

Epoxy and Urethane overlays are heavy duty, VOC-compliant floor coating systems designed to withstand the harsh conditions that are common to industrial and commercial applications. Aggregates and fillers are blended into the epoxy or urethane to create fluid applied overlays that are extremely hard, durable, impervious and long lasting; able to withstand surface impact and abrasion, chemical spills and thermal shock. The seamless flooring with integral cove base allows for easy containment of spills, cleanup with a hose; no joints to collect dirt and bacteria. An anti-microbial agent may be added for further protection although epoxies and urethanes are anti-bacterial by nature. Another advantage of adding aggregates into these coatings systems is that the sands make for a textured finish that aids in slip-resistance.
Typical applications include:
-
Commercial kitchens and food service industry; exceeds all FDA food service requirements
-
Industrial plants and engineering facilities
-
Municipal and Institutional facilities
-
Hospitals, clinics, and pharmaceutical facilities
-
Veterinarians and kennels
-
Laboratories
-
Police and Fire Stations
-
Restrooms, locker rooms and shower areas.
-
Retail and showroom floors
The color for these flooring systems may be determined with a solid color, pigmented topcoat; or by using colored quartz sand in a single color or multi-color blend, with a clear topcoat.
Toughstuff installs a proprietary epoxy overlay, Safety Floor T & B. For spec jobs,Toughstuff is an approved installer for General Polymer's, Liquid Concrete and other relevant coatings manufacturers.

Epoxy and urethane may also be applied by squeegee, roller or sprayer to go down thinner than the overlay systems described above; typically 1/16" or less total system thickness. Thinner coatings equal less materials, so these systems generally cost less than the much thicker overlay systems. A typical system consists of an epoxy primer with either an epoxy or a urethane topcoat, as dictated by the resistance requirements specific to each application. When specified correctly to match the application, and with proper mechanical surface preparation, thin epoxy and urethane coatings will remain intact and in good condition for many years.
Typical uses include:
- Auto garages; professional, municipal and residential
- Warehouses and shop floors
- Industrial, Manufacturing and Engineering facilities
- Chemical containment tanks
- Laboratories
- Police and Fire Stations
- Restrooms
- Retail and showroom floors

These coatings are available in clear and in a variety of standard colors. Decorative chips may be broadcast into coatings to achieve a more decorative look. Decorative chips come in two sizes and a variety of standard color blends. Customers also may design their own color blend with a wide selection of colors available. The amount of chips broadcast may also be varied to allow for different looks.
Fine aggregates or SharkGrip texture may be incorporated into the topcoat to achieve a light texture that aids in slip resistance.
